Discuss the role of reflection and strategies that can be used by instructors to promote the reflective process in an online course. I would like to start this assignment off with the following video. The title of the video is "What is a Reflective Essay Paper?” The video was taken from the internet site e How Family by Brian Leaf. When we consider the learning process, it is ongoing because we are always able to learning something new. The piece which is referred to as reflective provides great insight of what is mastered from the materials and what is still not. When reflection is provided at the online environment the importance of the reflection is increased. Due to the fact that online learners lack the verbal and facial clues of communication found in the traditional schools, the skillful use of discussion reflection is essential to promote learning. The online professor or even the learning peers should be able to reflect on what was learned by asking questions. Some effective online questions that can be asked are the following: (a) what concepts in your reading can you relate to? and (b) What are some concepts from your reading that you find are not understood? The role of reflection can be achieved in several forms (Palloff and Pratt, 2007). There is the formal reflection which may occur at the end of a course which will allow the student to record their growth from the beginning of the course and compare this to the assessment at the end of the course. A strategy that can be used by both professors and students is the discussion thread. There are various questions which can be used. Some of the more reflective questions are open ended questions (Kop, 2011).
The open ended questions promote deeper understanding. These questions are greater than the typical yes or no answers. These are thought provoking questions which time to answer and think about the answer is. There is generally no right are wrong answer here. There are a few ways that students can promote a collaborative reflection. One way collaborative discussion can take place is that learners can share their completed projects with each other. Traditional reflection was one sided. The instructor was responsible for the feedback which went to the student. The other students had no idea of how well or how poorly other students did. On the other hand the online students were able to share their completed work using such tools as Wiki, SharePoint’s and streamline videos.
